The Region

Lacave is in the north of the Lot and the departments of Correze and Dordogne are both only about half an hour distant. Correze is less well known than the very popular department of the Dordogne and has wonderful unspoiled countryside, river gorges and high plateaux.

There are fantastic towns, villages, castles and caves to be explored around Lacave. Some of the most interesting are Rocamadour (a very ancient pilgrimage site on the route to Santiago de Compostella), 8kms; Martel, a really well preserved but lively mediaeval market town 20kms; Carennac, with its beautiful Abbey 25kms; Figeac, with its Museum of Champollion 40kms; Sarlat 30kms; Collonges la Rouge, 40kms; and many more. Lacave has wonderful caves in the village.

The countryside is very beautiful with its towering limestone cliffs and high plateaux and its lush valley plantations of maize, walnuts and tobacco. The wild flowers are particularly interesting in April May and June and the butterflies are wonderful. You can explore the area in a leisurely way on foot, by mountain bike or canoe as well as on horseback. Many of the restaurants and campsites have swimming pools, which you can use if you have a snack. There are also a few places where it is safe to swim in the river- but please seek local advice first. There are two eighteen-hole golf courses within easy reach. One is just north west of Souillac, about 22kms from the cottage. Non-members are welcome and there is a good restaurant.

There are five restaurants in and around the village that are very varied (in both cost and menu) and dozens more within ten kilometres. The local cuisine is world-renowned and includes specialities such as confit, foie gras, Rocamadour goat's cheese, salads, walnut tarts and local trout and lamb.

All the local towns have markets at least once a week and Lacave has a farmers market twice a week in the evening during July and August.
